Central Goldfields Shire Council will make a formal submission to the Australian Electoral Commission objecting to the proposed changes to the federal electoral boundaries.

At an Ordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday (24/04), it was resolved that a submission be made to highlight the following concerns:

-       Central Goldfields Shire will be placed in an electoral where it has limited ‘community of interest’ within the proposed electoral division

-       The means of communication and travel within the proposed electoral division is prohibitive for many of our community members and a huge impost on not only Council but community group and organisations.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said the changes would affect representation of the Shire.

“It’s concerning as we as a Council and also our community members simply don’t have the resources to get in a car/plane and head up to Mildura.

“We are a very, very small part of a massive seat. In a seat of that size it’s going to make it very difficult to get access to a federal member, which we need.”

A submission will be provided to the Australian Electoral Commission by 4 May, 2018.
