Everyone is invited to step back in time on Sunday 7 July from 10.30am to 3pm as we celebrate 150 years of rail history in Maryborough.

Sunday 7 July 2024 marks 150 years since the first train from Melbourne arrived at Maryborough’s original station.

This railway station stood from 1874 to 1890, before the existing, iconic Station was built in 1890-1891. To celebrate this special occasion the Visitors Centre at the Station is hosting a program of fun and free activities including:

  • Welcoming “Queen Victoria” as she arrives at the Station on the 10.46am train
  • Music and entertainment
  • Station tours
  • Historic photographic displays
  • Digital animation ‘Welcome Stranger’ in the Visitor Centre theatrette
  • Vintage games and croquet

Everyone is invited to come along in period costume – or as you are! Entry is free.

Central Goldfields Shire Councillor Geoff Lovett said he was looking forward to celebrating such a significant occasion in our local rail history.

“How many young people realise that before this day in 1874, the quickest way to get to Maryborough from Ballarat was on a horse?”

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for both locals and visitors to not only enjoy a great program of activities but also enjoy the attraction that is the Maryborough Railway Station.

“Plus it’s an opportunity to see our newly redeveloped Visitor Centre, especially the digital animation the ‘Welcome Stranger’ in the theatrette. This highlights the true impact of the gold rush on Country and the First Nations people of this area, the Dja Dja Wurrung, as well as the economic riches and development that led to the buildings and infrastructure that we know today.”
