LAKE VICTORIA ALGAE

Our routine water testing has detected unsafe levels of blue-green algae in Lake Victoria at Princes Park, Maryborough.

Direct contact with affected water can cause skin rashes, eye, ear and nose irritation and if swallowed, vomiting or gastro. Seek medical or veterinary advice if you or your pets show symptoms.

Lake water should not be used for drinking, cooking or washing – boiling does not make water safe. Food from the Lake should not be eaten.

We have increased the frequency of testing of the Lake water and will keep the community updated. Please note that sprinkler systems in the park do not use Lake water.

For further information, or to report algae-related issues, contact our Environmental Health Team on 5461 0610.

ROADS AND WORKS

Dunolly-Avoca Road

Work continues on Dunolly-Avoca Road at Mt Hooghly to reconstruct a section of road almost one kilometre long.

40km/h speed limits and traffic lights are in operation during work times between 7am and 4pm. A 60km/h speed limit remains in place out-of-hours, due to loose stones and dust.

The reconstruction is supported by the Federal Government’s National Disaster Financial Assistance program.

Unsealed Roads

Our graders have been working in the north this week, following a schedule of works, also picking up a few extra sections of road along the way.

Around Bet Bet: Peart, Timbertop, Lees and Bet Bet Creek roads, Bennetts Lane and George Street.

Around Timor: Andersons, Denyers, Reservoir, Hendersons, Cousin Jack and Timor roads.

Our Roads and Works team encourages residents to advise of unsealed roads needing attention by contacting our Customer Service Centre on 5461 0610 or by filling in a quick form at:

BIN CHANGES

Waste-bins-without-label-CROP.jpg

The Victorian Government is standardising household waste and recycling services across the state.

This means that all Victorian council kerbside services will move to a four-bin system.

To help us prepare for the transition, we’re inviting residents to share their feedback on waste.

This will help us roll out the new 4-bin service that best meets the needs of our community.

Meet with us at Talbot Farmers Market (Sundays: 18 May and 15 June) and Dunolly Country Market (Sundays: 27 April and 22 June) to discuss what you think is the best waste system for our Shire, or complete our online survey at:

 www.engage.cgoldshire.vic.gov.au/waste

CARISBROOK SPORTS BOOST

The Tullaroop Leisure Centre now has upgraded facilities, thanks to Tiny Towns funding from the Victorian Government. These include:

  • Extensive build out of allocated storage areas
  • Repairs to walls and additional shelving
  • Split system air conditioning units
  • New glass wall on squash court

As a shared facility between the Carisbrook Primary School, the Maryborough Squash Club and the community, the improvements will help keep everyone’s equipment organised and those using the facilities more comfortable in winter and summer.

BUSINESS EXPO PLAN

Join us for a Central Goldfields Village Business Expo information session to learn more about exhibiting, networking, and collaborating with other local businesses next Wednesday 9 April from 5pm at the Maryborough Community Hub.

Over 200 business people from across Central Goldfields and adjoining shires will come together at Maryborough Harness Racing Club on May 9 to connect and network, seek new business and commercial opportunities, and meet with government leaders from local, state and federal levels.

Next week’s information session will explain it all. You can also visit:

SHARE WHAT MATTERS TO YOU

Join the Community Panel

We are currently developing our Council Plan - which will inform all our work, decision making and strategic direction over the next four years.

We are inviting 20 community members, aged 18 years and over, to put their hand up to help shape our priorities over the next four years.

Expressions of interest are welcome from anyone who lives, works or owns a business in our Shire.

The panel will be an opportunity to learn about what Council does, contribute ideas and help develop draft recommendations. No special skills are required, just a willingness to

To consider others’ views and work collaboratively is enough.

We’ll also need you to be available to attend three, in-person workshops in Maryborough:

• Tuesday 6 May: 5.30pm to 8.30pm

• Wednesday 7 May: 5.30pm to 8.30pm

• Thursday 8 May: 5.30pm to 8.30pm

Meals and refreshments will be provided, with childcare and travel arrangements available by request.

Panel members will be selected to make sure we have community representation from all walks of life - across age, gender, employment status, cultural background and townships.

Each panel member that attends all three evenings will receive $100 in recognition of their time and contribution.

Applications have been extended and will close on Friday, 11 April at 5pm.
